    Call of Duty: Black Ops

The announcement of Black Ops raised serious questions for Call of Duty fans. Could Treyarch, for so long the series' 'other studio' match Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare games? Might the World At War developer's decision to set the game in the Cold War era make the experience feel a little… low tech? And would we see the return of Nazi Zombies?

The November 9th launch date answered those questions with an emphatic "Yes", a resounding "No" and a reassuring "Absolutely!" Call of Duty: Black Ops singleplayer campaign was an explosive tour-de-force of shooter gameplay and flashback storytelling set in key locations across the world and out of it too, while the multiplayer was enhanced with Combat Points used to upgrade your character's armoury and skills, and Wager Matches where you put those points on the line – giving gamers the ultimate test of nerve and skill, where every win and loss mattered.

Add in the revamped four-player online Zombie mode where you get to play as Presidents Nixon and JFK, and the question is not whether Treyarch met the challenge; it's how Infinity Ward could ever top it!

Fantstic game. The campaign is breath taking yet the online is very good. Zombies for me is the best part of this game, even though ive only been up to round 23 on it, it is brilliant. The graphics are not as good as MW2 but they are better than COD4. I would recommend this game to all COD fans and first person shooter fans aswell. Better than MW2 but not as good as COD4. 4/5

    DEVELOPER: Harmonix
    PUBLISHER: Microsoft
    RELEASED: 10/11/10

    Dance Central

Dance games are nothing new, but one where you don't need any kind of controller – be it a mat, maracas or motion-sensing remote – always had the potential to be genre-defining. With the power of Kinect, that's exactly what Rock Band creators Harmonix have been able to achieve.

Playing Dance Central is dead easy. You stand in front of the Kinect sensor, swipe your arms to navigate the menus, choose your dancer, pick a song from a wide selection of popular pop and dance tracks. Then you copy your on-screen dancer's moves, with handy prompts letting you know what's coming next. Kinect tracks your whole body's movement and a simple colour indicator tells you how well you're doing. Then you can go crazy and make your mates laugh by making a fool of yourself with a freestyle bit, before a friend jumps in to have a bash!

By starting off simple and gradually teaching you more and more moves, Dance Central inspires dancefloor confidence and helps burn calories. It's a fantastic showcase for Kinect, and fully justifies its place in the GAME Award shortlist.

No matter how embarrassed you feel at dancing in front of the TV or how bad you are at dancing, don't be...this is one of the most fun games I have played on the 360. Factor in you are actually getting fit from dancing instead of just sat in front of the screen twiddling your thumbs, this is a win win situation. This along with Kinect Sports are the best games on Kinect as of Jan 2011. Also, I just want to mention GAME have to have the best online mail order on the internet.

    FIFA 11

While FIFA 10 was widely acclaimed, there were a few things fans weren't so mad about – including ping-pong passing which homed in on teammates a little too easily. That's gone in FIFA 11, replaced by a Pro Passing system more prone to realistic errors, but with more subtlety and flexibility.

That in turn favours the second big addition for FIFA 11 – Personality+. It's a feature that enhances the individual traits of specific players, so if you want a through-ball played right, you'll be best off giving it to the likes of Cesc Fabregas.

Even keepers benefit from FIFa 11's Personality+ - which is helpful, because you can now play as them. That means full 11vs11 online matches are now a reality for the first time in the genre, and together with other subtle tweaks – like trickier lobs, finer dribbling controls and more physical midfield skirmishes – makes for another fine year of digital footy fun.

    HALO REACH

Welcome to Reach: Humanity's last and best defence against the fearsome interstellar crusade of the alien Covenant. Home of the United Nations Space Command's fleet and the super solider Spartan program, Reach is doomed to fall – but with your help, Noble Six, this fateful battle could turn the tide of war in our favour.

A prequel to the original trilogy, Halo Reach is Bungie's final Halo game, and fittingly enough feels like a compilation of the series' best bits, minus its most annoying enemy, The Flood. Instead you get a bombastic campaign of pitched battles against some of gaming's most intelligent foes – all playable with three friends in online co-op – and a further refinement of the online multiplayer and Firefight modes which cement the series' legacy. On top of that, everything you do earns credits used to buy new armour, proving a satisfying reward for your hours of running, gunning and assassinating.

Reach will fall… but not without one helluva fun fight.

And again Bungie amazes us all. Halo Reach it's one of the most complete and fun games of 2010! Incredibly unpredictable with it's online multiplayer mode and a dramatic and sentimental, yet explosive, campaign mode. The Firefight is back, with amounts of custom settings that you can put on your own way, for the ones that enjoy killing hordes of Covenant! Halo: Reach delivers a unic package with it's unic way that Halo fans love, with replay value that none game can match. It¥s that game that you'll play and never forget. Undoubtedly a must have.

An absolutely fantastic game. Excellent Campaign, captivating Multiplayer and challenging Firefight mode, along with the new and improved Forge mode, in which you can edit and create your very own maps and gametypes! Bungie's swansong to the Halo series was, in my opinion, the best game of 2010.

This is one of the few games, nowadays, that is almost perfect. The campaign is fun and very challenging on harder difficulties but lower difficulties still make it challenging for new players and your will want to keep playing it as it is a good way of earning credits, the in game currency. in halo 3 you had to unlock armor by doing certain challenges which made it feel rewarding but quite hard to achieve, now you unlock armor buy getting to a certain level and buying it with credits. Even if you haven't played other halo games this is a must buy as this will give you many hours of fun.

    Heavy Rain

How far would you go to save someone you love? That's the question posed by Heavy Rain, a dramatic and drop-dead gorgeous crime thriller from the team behind 2005 cult hit Fahrenheit.

Fahrenheit aside, there really isn't a game even remotely similar to Heavy Rain. It plays out closer to a movie than a typical story-driven game, with gameplay – a curious mix of ponderous plodding and intense timed button presses – happening in cinematic scenes with multiple choices. Each of the four playable characters is inherently flawed, and that makes them interesting. Every decision made can have an impact over who lives and dies, and that makes it compelling. And the big twist… well, sufficed to say, gamers and critics alike will be talking about it for years to come.

The future of videogame storytelling? Possibly. One of the best games of 2010? Absolutely.

    LIMBO

Limbo has the honour of being the very first download-only game to make it into the GAME Award shortlist. Presented entirely in shades of black and white, this Xbox Live Arcade title is one of the year's most atmospheric releases; no small feat for a side-scrolling platformer without a big-time budget or Hollywood voice talent.

In fact, unlike every other game in the shortlist, Limbo has no spoken dialogue at all. And no cutscenes. And barely any real enemies, either. Instead it has a little boy, traversing a sombre world by running, jumping, pushing, pulling and climbing to solve spatial puzzles and make it through three broken, ruinous areas, where shortly-spaced checkpoints make death not a frustration, but a learning experience: Urging you to think laterally; teaching you to always be vigilant.

At only three hours long and boasting gameplay that distils the essence of the 2D platformer, Limbo is a triumph of minimal, elegant design and sombre storytelling, giving gamers an experience up there with the biggest videogame blockbusters of 2010. For 1200 Xbox LIVE Points, it's a steal.

    Mass Effect 2

The first Mass Effect was, by general consensus, a very good sci-fi adventure that fell just short of greatness. Mass Effect 2 addressed every bit of fan feedback, delivering meaty cover-based gunplay and all of the morality-bending role-playing you'd expect from RPG supremos BioWare, but without much of the geeky stat-mongering that can make the genre so scary to newcomers.

The story sees the return of Commander Shepard, this time jetting off into the stars with the resources of hard-line human activists Cerberus to recruit a party and undertake a perilous suicide mission. With the enemy an enigmatic race known as The Collectors abducting humans and ferrying them off through an uncharted Mass Effect Relay, only the very best can hope to survive – but with so many sidequests and choices to make, no two playthroughs need ever be the same.

A dark middle chapter in a trilogy of fast-growing acclaim, Mass Effect 2 is a game of astonishing quality. Will it be your game of the year?

Incredible. This is a must buy for anyone who obviously played and liked the first Mass Effect. If you haven't completed the first Mass Effect i would recommend doing so because you can carry the same character and choices over to the second game, a concept that more games need to inherit. This game is a masterpiece of gaming with a compelling story to rival any science fiction game or film. Cannot wait for the third.

It's one of the best rpg's ever made, and personally my favourite sci-fi game of all time! Has a huge and epic story, great voice acting and characters that looks almost real. This second installment is even better than the first Mass Effect since Bioware made sure to correct everything their fans asked. Smooth gameplay, interesting and action-pumped shooting sequences following the story elements, cutscenes. I recommend this game to everyone and not just rpg or sci-fi fans but every gamer out there looking for 40-50 hours of fun! (Get the first one as well to understand the whole situation and story!)

Absolutely love this game from start to finish. Great mix of rpg and shooter which all flows nicely from one scene to the next.. Never felt myself getting tired or bored of it, in fact I found it hard to put down my controller once I'd put the game on.. Very highly recommend this game easily the best game I've ever played 5/5

    Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

After years of edgy street racing and even a stab at realistic track-based driving, EA decided it needed a fresh direction for their flagship racing series. And who better to inject a nitro boost than the creators of Burnout?

Criterion Games' Hot Pursuit pits daredevil racers against stop-at-nothing cops and asks you to pick your side. Either way, you'll be driving some of the world's most high performance motors across the incredible scenery of Seacrest County, but the weapons at your disposal will be very different. Will you spend your driving career deploying spike traps, helicopters and EMPs to halt your quarry as a law enforcer? Or will you jam the radar of your pursuers and disappear into a turbo-powered dust cloud?

The game's biggest innovation though is how it tracks everyone's progress online. The all-new Autolog function lets you see how you stack up against your friends; even challenging you to better them. It's a brilliant feature which enhances the natural competitiveness of the genre, and sets it apart from every other racer in 2010 to make it to the GAME Award shortlist. Can it cross the finish line first?

Brilliant game. Exciting racing and chasing. Lots of team based strategy in the Hot Pursuit online games. Addictive as hell. Autolog is great for seeing how good you are compared to your friends and lets you directly challenge their race times. 5* all the way... oh and the graphics are sublime...

I got given this game for Christmas. So far I am really enjoying it. Lots of New 2010 Cars to unlock, Pagani Zonda, Aston Martin One-77, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Mercedes SLS AMG, so many more. All cars are great fun to drive. This game provides some enjoyable, high speed, arcade racing action. Lots of great events. Good Online. Plently of PSN Trophies and in game milestones. I say its worth a purchase! :)

Simply Fantastic! The revolutionary Autolog concept is fantastic, as you become embroiled in beating your friend`s times, making online play fantastic. The storyline is fantastic, either way. As a Cop, you enjoy the luxury of some of the most powerful production cars of all time, such as the Bugatti Veyron Super-Sport and Gumpert Apollo S. Needless to say the Burnout-style Hot Pursuits are fantastic. As a racer, trying to evade the Cops is a great buzz. Coupled with timeless graphics, it provides quite possibly the best driving game for PS3 (Apart from F1 2010) P.S I`m yet to play GT5.

    Red Dead Redemption

The Western may be one of Hollywood's favourite genres, but up until 2010 no-one had really roped in a successful formula for gameplay with six-shooters and Stetsons. One of the best attempts had been Rockstar Games' Red Dead Revolver, and it was that title which laid the basis for Red Dead Redemption, the first must-play cowboy game in recent memory.

The secret ingredients were the horsepower of next gen systems aligned with the technical brilliance of the engine powering Grand Theft Auto IV. Swapping cars for horses, automatics for revolvers, unlikely gangster Nico Bellic for wantaway outlaw John Marston and Liberty City for the American Frontier, Mexico and the Great Plains, Rockstar delivered an enormous free-roaming adventure which every serious gamer should play, and a story any silver screen director would be proud to tell.

Add in online multiplayer and co-op modes which let gamers act out their childhood cowboy fantasies from the comfort of a couch, and you've one of the year's biggest and best-value packages.

Redemption exceeded all expectations, storyline, graphics, gameplay value, everything! It captures all the iconic set pieces of the old west and brings them all to live in a stunning world that you can't not explore! Rockstar have really outdone themselves this time, I doubt they can improve on this masterpiece, 10/10

Rockstar has done it again. Red Dead Redemption takes the winning formula of their GTA series and places players in the old west, with a huge open world to explore there's plenty for players to do. Herding cattle, hunting animals, capturing bandits, none of it ever gets old as you lose yourself in the authentic world around you. Missions are varied as you meet the usual assortment of crazy and unique characters. The dead-eye targetting system realy makes you feel like a true gunslinger. Overall, it's almost impossible not to recommend this game, unless you have hated past rockstar games, it's a must have.

    Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy was one of the best 3D platform games ever made, blending bright and breezy visuals with Nintendo's genius level design and wonderful controls tailored completely to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. And you know what? Super Mario Galaxy 2 is all of those things – but even better!

There are few changes to the formula, but the few differences are undoubtedly for the best. For starters, the world map is easier to navigate, allowing you to get straight to the job of bounding about levels, picking up power-ups and collecting stars. Speaking of power-ups, there are more of them than ever – including new drill and rocket modes for the dungaree-wearing plumber, plus the welcome return of his dinosaur pal Yoshi, who can gobble up enemies, swing from platforms by his super-stretchy tongue, and even puff up like a balloon to float through levels!

Familiar but fresh and full of inventive little Nintendo touches that are guaranteed to put a smile on anyone's face, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was undoubtedly one of 2010s best games.
